The purpose of this short course is to provide a comprehensive background to certain contemporary practices in design and construction of tunnels and underground structures.

Recent advancements in the design and construction of steel-concrete composite structural steels have transformed the building and infrastructural work. It is important for researchers and practitioners to stay abrest of these developments in view of the huge opportunities presented in infrastructure construction in Singapore and the Asia Pacific Region. Steel and composite construction is often adopted in high-rise buildings, large span structures and infrastructural work due to their high structural efficiency with respect to high strength-to-weight ratio as well as their robustness against instability and accidental loads.
